From Jesuit village to a sanctuary for the soul
Trancoso was born from an encounter
Before becoming the charming village we know today, it was the territory of the Pataxó people, who inhabited this stretch of the southern coast of Bahia long before the arrival of the Portuguese.
In 1586, the Jesuits founded the Village of São João Batista dos Índios (Aldeia de São João Batista dos Índios), one of the first religious missions in Brazil. The small white church at the top of the Quadrado — now a symbol of Trancoso — is a living legacy of that era.
Over time, the village grew slowly, surrounded by the forest and the sea, almost hidden from the rest of the world. The centuries passed unhurriedly, and Trancoso maintained its own pace, preserving in its simple architecture and way of life the mix of indigenous, African, and Portuguese cultures.
In the 1970s, travelers and artists — the so-called "biribandos" — discovered the village and were captivated by its raw beauty. They brought new ideas, colors, and lifestyles, without breaking the spirit of the place. It was a reunion between tradition and freedom, which molded the Trancoso of today: rustic and sophisticated in the same measure, preserving the nature and the sense of belonging.
Today, Trancoso is a living mosaic of stories and cultures.
The indigenous roots still echo in the names, colors, and gestures; the Jesuit legacy persists in the church and the stone streets; and the creative energy of the new residents continues to renew the soul of the village.
More than a destination, Trancoso is a coexistence of times — past, present, and dream, side by side.
